Shop List

For Saris

Nalli Silks - When it comes to Saris, at least amongst Tamilians, Nalli Silks is the mother ship. With staggering variety across price ranges, it is unlikely that you will come away having liked nothing. While shops like Sarangi, Shilpi etc. (mentioned below in this list) are great for more contemporary takes on the Kanjivaram, Nalli is THE PLACE for some of those traditional colour combinations that you won't end up buying later in all probability.

Sarangi - While I'll be buying my saris only in December when I head to Chennai, I know I am definitely going here for some of my Kanjivarams. This is one of those absolute unlike shops shops. It's more of an experience - It's quiet, calm and you can get all the solitude, time and trials you need to make those super important buying decisions!

Shilpi - This is a great boutique store in Chennai with saris, salwar kameez, kurtis, fusion wear, and some smart and trendy ready made blouses that are worth a try. However, since their collection rotates, you may not always find something you love. Another caveat - they won't have the super heavy wedding stuff. But you are sure to find something you love for your larger trousseau here.

This is their facebook page

For Jewellery

Aquamarine - Great for good fashion jewellery as well as silver stuff. Will post the two rings I got from here soon. And I plan to go back for some coordinated purchases also once the outfits are bought! They are located at Kemps Corner, Colaba Causeway and Bandra (west) in Mumbai.

Tanishq - A well known brand across the country, reliable in the quality of their Gold and diamonds. With the introduction of a wedding floor in some of their larger outlets, there's now more choice here as well, which to me is quite a relief!

Website and store addresses

Jugal Kishore - This is a shop in Chennai that my mom and I have been patronising for a few years now. They have great fashion jewellery and will even custom make stuff for you within the week! So it's a good place to get all those matching sets of jewellery for each of the trousseau outfits and those highly heavy pieces of jewellery for some of the wedding ceremonies as well! They also told me that they plan to offer online shopping soon. So go ahead and have a peek at their website here

For Travel

While travel doesn't sound like the conventional wedding category, it is VERY VERY important. Right from tickets for travelling to the wedding to planning your honeymoon (especially if you are doing it yourself), travel is a huge part of the wedding experience. Here I am just going to list the generic, must visit, must use sites. Of course, there will be lots of country and geography specific ones you will want to browse when planning the honeymoon.

Expedia - I love their multi-destination ticketing and I find them much more economical than cleartrip for international travel

Cleartrip - For all domestic flights.

IRCTC - For all train tickets within India. Very Important for a wedding like mine where I have people coming into Chennai from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and maybe a few other cities as well!

Tripadvisor - For all destination exploration and honeymoon planning!

Airbnb - For offbeat, fun and economical accommodation, anywhere in the world!
